CIUS is proud to announce the release of its Policy Priorities for 2025, outlining urgent actions needed to secure Europe’s agri-food industry and maintain its position as a global export leader.
The document highlights the chronic sugar deficit facing the EU, with a shortfall of 2-3 million tonnes each year. Excessive restrictions on sugar imports are threatening the competitiveness of over 15,000 food and drink companies that rely on this essential ingredient to produce high-value EU products like chocolate, confectionery, and soft drinks.
Our key recommendations include:
✅ Restoring free trade with Ukraine by June 2025
✅ Finalizing trade agreements with Mercosur, Australia, and Thailand that include duty-free sugar quotas
✅ Reducing market distortions and ensuring transparent governance in EU sugar regulations
CIUS calls on policymakers to act now. A secure, sustainable supply of sugar is vital for preserving Europe’s agri-food export surplus, supporting jobs, and driving economic growth.
