CIUS and ESRA support an ambitious EU–Thailand Trade Agreement

The Committee of European Sugar Users (CIUS), together with the European Sugar Refineries Association (ESRA), have issued a joint statement supporting the conclusion of an ambitious and balanced EU–Thailand Free Trade Agreement, including enhanced market access for sugar.

A comprehensive agreement would contribute to greater diversification of supply sources, strengthen the resilience of the European sugar value chain and support the competitiveness of food and industrial users across the European Union.

As negotiations continue, CIUS and ESRA underline the importance of considering the interests of the entire sugar supply chain, including downstream users and refiners that depend on secure, competitive and diversified supplies.

Additional access for Thailand would complement existing supply channels and contribute to the strategic diversification of EU trade flows, while all imported sugar would continue to comply with the European Union’s food safety and phytosanitary requirements.

CIUS and ESRA believe that trade policy should ensure an appropriate balance between the interests of producers, refiners and users. An ambitious EU–Thailand agreement would reinforce competitiveness and resilience, while helping to integrate the European sugar sector into an increasingly interconnected global market.
