The Committee of European Sugar Users (CIUS) and the European Sugar Refiners Association (ESRA) express their strong support for the swift ratification and implementation of the EU–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The associations highlight that the agreement is strategically important for the EU sugar-using and refining industries. It will strengthen trade relations, enhance supply resilience, and contribute to a more competitive and sustainable agri-food sector.
Contrary to recent claims suggesting market disruption, the deal introduces only a duty-free quota of 180,000 tonnes of raw sugar from Brazil, equivalent to just 1% of EU sugar consumption. This sugar will be refined within the EU, ensuring the continued operation of Europe’s refining industry and preserving employment across the sector.
CIUS and ESRA emphasise that the EU–Mercosur FTA represents a balanced and forward-looking agreement, supporting economic growth, sustainability, and long-term stability for the European sugar market.
